South Korea demands 6-year jail term for Hyundai CEO
story Published: 6/19/07
SEOUL (Reuters)
South Korean prosecutors today sought a six-year jail term for Hyundai Motor Group's chairman for embezzlement at a court hearing of his appeal against a three-year sentence handed down in February.
Most of the vehicles on the list are small cars, but a couple don't technically belong in that category. The Camry Hybrid is a midsize sedan with a roomy interior and a gas-electric hybrid system that produces a V6-like 187 horsepower while achieving 40 mpg in the city.
The other exception to the small car trend is the Ford Escape Hybrid and its Mercury Mariner Hybrid sibling. The Escape Hybrid 2WD gets an impressive 36 mpg, while the AWD versionas well as the Mariner Hybrid, which is only available as AWDstill do well at 33 mpg.
Three of the vehicles on the list are all new for the 2007 model year, including the Camry Hybrid, the Toyota Yaris and the Honda Fit. The Yaris and Fit are two of several small cars new to the market for 2007 that offer roomy interiors in small, economical packages. The Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio also fall into this category.
No pickup trucks, vans, luxury cars or large sedans rank in the top ten, and the Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid are the only vehicles from U.S.-based automakers on the list.
Unlike last year, there are no models with diesel engines on the list of top ten fuel misers for 2007.
The reason: diesel fuel is changing in the U.S. to an Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD).
Most of the diesel vehicles on the list last year (Volkswagen Jetta TDI, New Beetle TDI, and Golf TDI) are being re-engineered to work with this new fuel, and therefore won't be sold in America for 2007.
However, a number of new diesels that will run cleaner and more efficiently with this new fuel will likely be arriving in the next 12 months.

Most fuel efficient cars - SUVs
Independent fuel efficiency and emissions figures produced for SUVs
Want to save fuel and cut down your CO2 emissions? The DTI has just unveiled the "Act On CO2" initiative to encourage car buyers to purchase more fuel efficient motors. Auto Express has conducted its own research to find Britain's 100 most economical motors.
The tests were conducted on public roads and take into account traffic conditions, weather, types of road and all the other variables that influence your mpg. Ten classes of cars were tested, from city cars to SUVs and family saloons to MPVs.
Of course SUVs don't have the best reputation among the environmentally conscious, but as you can see below only one of our top ten failed to top 30mpg. Top performer was the Honda CR-V, which uses the same engine as the Accord that won our family car class. It returned 36.4mpg.

Most fuel efficient hatchbacks cars
Independent fuel efficiency and emissions figures produced for hatchbacks
In the hatchback sector the best performer was the Citroen C4 1.6 HDi which returned 49.6 mpg and has CO2 emissions of 129g/km. As you can see from the table below, the second placed BMW 118d is even cleaner at 123g/km, but failed to translate that into superior economy. Biggest disappointment was the Toyota Prius, which only just squeezed into the top 10, achieving 41.5mpg - 37 per cent under government claims.

Most fuel efficient superminis cars
Independent fuel efficiency and emissions figures produced for superminis
Although it emits more CO2 than the majority of the other cars in our superminis top 10, the VW Polo proved the most efficient, coming within eight per cent of matching its official combined figure. It was one of only two cars (the other being a Kia Rio) that managed to break the 50mpg barrier. Only one petrol car broke into the top 10, the Toyota Yaris 1.0 ending up ninth with an economy figure of 44.2mpg.

Most fuel efficient family cars
Independent fuel efficiency and emissions figures produced for family cars
Top of the executive chart was the Mercedes E220 CDI which managed to hold off the challenge of the BMW 525d by returning 37.1mpg. That was still 17 per cent behind official claims, though. The Citroen C6 almost matched the government's figure of 32.5mpg, but that was only good enough for seventh spot.

Top 3 States With Most Expensive Gas
Hawaii, Illinois and California have the highest gasoline prices in the United States, according to a new survey by AAA.
While prices on the mainland have dropped about 20 cents in the last month in the first price decline since January, that hasn't happened in Hawaii where drivers pay an average of $3.40 a gallon for regular unleaded. Illinois came in at an average of $3.34, while California drivers pay $3.30.
Where is the cheapest gas in the country?
You'll find that in South Carolina at an average of $2.88 a gallon.
Hypermiling
You too can wring much more out of every gallon of gas, even if you don't go to the crazy lengths of so-called hypermilers. Here are basic steps anyone can take to get real savings.
At its fueleconomy.gov Web site, the U.S. Department of Energy says that by following the speed limit and swearing off aggressive driving (rapid acceleration and deceleration), drivers can improve mpg by anywhere from 12% to 55%. An additional 19% improvement can be achieved, it is claimed, merely by keeping a car properly maintained.
