Jaguar XK/XKR
Jaguar's flashy and fast XK coupe and convertible are overdue but worthy replacements for the aging XK8.
They offer a roomier, higher-quality interior, a more rigid body and improved powertrains.
A 300-hp 4.2-liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission are standard.
The higher-performance XKR versions upgrade to a 420-hp, supercharged V8 and a stiffer suspension.
2007 JAGUAR XK CONVERTIBLE
Jaguar's humble beginning was as a motorcycle side car manufacturer.
Pleasant, styling, Open-air motoring with power top that moves up or down in a flash.
Jaguar is in a fix because Ford Motor Co., which owns it, is in a jam. Jaguar doesn't make money, one reason Ford doesn't either.
So, the rumor mill is working overtime that Jaguar will be awarded to the highest bidder, and it looks like that former Ford President Jacques Nasser will ride to the rescue to take the luxury British marque off of Bill Ford's hands.
That would be bitter irony because one of the reasons the Ford chairman pink-slipped Nasser was his fetish for acquiring other companies.
While Ford has put a "for sale" sign on Aston Martin, he's been mum about his intentions to unload Jaguar.
Jaguar spokeswoman Anne Clinard insists the fate of Jaguar isn't keeping folks out of the showroom and, in fact, the new XK is bringing folks in who haven't visited recently or ever.
stylists seem to have gone out of their way to keep it from looking like a Jaguar. The XK features a sharply sloping coupe-like profile and from the front looks a tad like an Aston Martin.
The 4.2-liter, 300-horsepower V-8 cranks out the power quickly and takes flight in earnest, thanks in part to the car's light-weight aluminum body replacing the heavy steel.
The zero- to 60-m.p.h. claim is 6 seconds. The engine is teamed with a 6-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual shifting.
Fuel economy is far better than expected at 18 m.p.g. city, 27 m.p.g. highway.
The XKR rendition with a supercharged 4.2-liter developing 420 h.p. and claiming zero-to-60 rocket status of less than 5 seconds, comes out early next year.
Standard Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS). CATS uses computer sensors to control body pitch and roll regardless of road conditions. No up and down or sideways movment.
It also features stability control with traction control and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.
rain-sensing wipers that, when switched to automatic mode, turn on along with the headlamps when it rains. And with the roof down, the ventilation system automatically distributes the airflow--warm or cool--to the face.
Of course, even $80,000 cars aren't perfect. With the top up, the trunk barely has room to hold a briefcase and forget even that with the top stored there.
There are two rows of seats to hold four bodies--in theory. Because the front-row seat backs nearly touch the back-row seat fronts, best to use those seats to store all the stuff that won't fit in the "trunk."

Jaguar C-XF Concept
Story Filed: 1/7/2007
The four-door sport sedan shows new design direction for future Jags.
The C-XF concept is a dynamic, new, four-door sport sedan that is a clear indication in the design direction of the next-generation Jaguar sedans, which will begin with a replacement sedan for the S-TYPE early in 2008.
The C-XF was designed by the same teams that produced the new Jaguar XK for 2005, led by Ian Callum, director of design, Jaguar Cars and Julian Thomson, head of advanced design.
"One thing should be abundantly clear whenever people are discussing Jaguar design, " asserts Callum, "Jaguars should be seen as modern cars and in the future people will appreciate them for that."
"Throughout its history Jaguar has created some of the most striking, modern and beautiful sports saloons imaginable and our objective with C-XF was to recognize those principal (sic) design disciplines," explains Callum. "The values that I see in Jaguar aesthetics include purity, dynamism, latent power, balance and modernity."
C-XF's Design
The C-XF design is very modern yet the design team took inspiration from great Jaguars of the past, including the 1950 Mark VII and the 1959 Mark 2, both designs that were influenced by great sporting Jaguars including the XK120.
The front of the C-XF is dominated by a bold, aggressive grille that is set back deep into the body and finished in black chrome. The headlights are narrow and angular like a single slim wedge that evolve the twin-lamp motif so familiar from earlier Jaguars. A blue streak of light between the two lights creates the appearance of the iris of a cat when illuminated.
The main feature of the profile is a strong shoulder line that flows from the nose of the car, under the side glass and into the pronounced arch over the rear wheel. The cabin of the C-XF is low and sporty, with narrow glass and bright aluminum trim to accentuate the coupe-like feel.
At the rear, the C-XF is also aggressive with the shoulder line flowing from the C-pillar to the tapered tail with a wide look that is emphasized by the lower diffuser.
Callum describes the interior as "one of the most exciting interiors that Jaguar has ever done" with an emphasis on elegant performance rather than luxury that is first seen in the lightweight, sculpted front seats, trimmed with semi-aniline leather.
The rear seat includes two bucket seats and a tall center transmission tunnel gives the sense of sitting low in the car.
The interior has a tone-on-tone theme with a brushed aluminum fascia that wraps around the interior. Other materials include a unique carbon fiber pattern leather and Poplar wood that has been scorched for a rich feel.
"C-XF is a showcase for the innovative technologies, some of which will feature in one way or another on the next generation of Jaguar cars," says Callum.
"Every Jaguar interior should have a sense of fun, but we also recognize that technology should only be there when you want to use it."
Power of the Jag
The C-XF is powered by an upgraded version of Jaguar's 4.2-liter supercharged V8 that is tuned to produce more than 420 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque at very low engine speeds?
combined with a six-speed automatic transmission with Jaguar
Sequential Shift manual shift capability. The engine wiring is incased in Beru F1 System's unique Wire in Composite (WIC) technology that completely encloses the wiring in a carbon fiber sleeve.
"C-XF is the most dynamic and modern four-door car Jaguar has ever made, a design showcase heralding the next generations of our sports saloons. It signals a future for Jaguar that is as exciting as the C-XF itself " explains Callum.
2008 Jaguar’s XJ Sedan . . .
gets a freshened exterior and revised interior for the 2008 model year. The 2008 XJ will be easily recognizable with a revised front-end design, new side power vents, a rear spoiler and a new rear bumper.
Inside are new seats which are not only designed for increased comfort, but front seat backs have been redesigned to provide increased more leg and foot room.
Heated front seats are now standard equipment with the option of adding seat coolers. Meanwhile, a special edition XKR Portfolio will be available for the 2008 model year.
The Celestial Black paint combined with the 20-inch polished Cremona 5-spoke alloy wheels and polished aluminum side vents help this special model stand apart from the standard XKR.
Available as coupe or convertible, the XKR Portfolio features a new high-performance braking system with the largest brakes ever fitted to a production Jaguar.
The stopping power should be most welcome, given that under the hood is a 420-horsepower supercharged V8 engine that can push this sleek car to 60 mph in less than five seconds.
Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company

The name was changed to SS Jaguar in 1935
