2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC
The 2007 E320 BLUETEC is the first in a series of high-tech diesels from Mercedes that delivers great performance and excellent fuel economy
clean diesel vehicles designed to meet stringent new emission standards.
The newest diesel-powered vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, the E320 BLUETEC looks like any other model from the E-Class lineup. The latest advances in diesel technology make it much more difficult to distinguish from its gasoline-powered counterparts than diesels of the past.
With four valves per cylinder, centrally located piezo-electric injectors, CDI direct injection, a turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine and exhaust gas recirculation, the new engine eliminates the negative perceptions—such as being noisy, rough and smelly—that were previously associated with diesel engines.
The BLUETEC adds additional technology to reduce exhaust emissions and will be the first diesel vehicle to meet strict new emission regulations for 2007 known as the EPA's Bin 8 standards. The new limits are so tough that none of the diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. market for 2006 meet the standards, including the E320 CDI that is replaced by the E320 BLUETEC for 2007.
The good news is that the E320 BLUETEC is the first of a wave of new clean diesel engines that will be offered in the U.S. as an attractive alternative to buyers of luxury cars and SUVs with the arrival of "clean" ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel in October 2006.
While the E320 BLUETEC meets the EPA's Bin 8 standards, it will only be sold in 45 states because it will not meet the standards in California, New York, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. Mercedes-Benz plans to offer BLUETEC diesel-powered versions of the M-Class, R-Class and GL-Class sport-utility vehicles in 2008 for sale in all 50 states that will meet the EPA's more stringent Bin 5 standards that go into effect for 2009.
"Clean" diesel is already available in Europe, where half of the new cars sold are powered by diesel engines, and allows the use of particulate filters as part of the emission control system as well as efficient treatment of nitrogen oxide emissions. The new fuel contains less than 15 ppm sulfur content where the previous fuel was 350 ppm. Reducing sulfur in diesel fuel also lowers other undesirable compounds such as polycyclic aromatics.
High Torque, Excellent Fuel Economy
The E320 BLUETEC is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 that delivers the torque of a V8 engine with the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder. According to Mercedes-Benz figures, the E320 BLUETEC will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which definitely places it in the sport sedan category, while the estimated fuel economy rating is 26 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.
The E320 BLUETEC engine delivers 400 lb-ft of torque, a figure that exceeds many gasoline V8 models, and the torque is available over a wide power band, from 1600 to 2400 rpm. The 3.0-liter V6 is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with a TouchShift manual shift mode that efficiently keeps the engine in the optimum rpm range.
In general, fuel consumption for the diesel engine is 20 to 40 percent less than a gasoline engine of comparable size while delivering 30 to 50 percent more torque, which translates into similar drivability with superior fuel-efficiency.
Driving the E320 BLUETEC is a little bit different than driving a gasoline-powered E-Class. The diesel engine operates in a narrower rpm range, with a maximum engine speed of 4600 rpm, compared with the E350 powered by a gasoline V6 with a maximum engine speed of 6000 rpm. But the 7-speed automatic shifts so quickly and smoothly to keep the engine in the operating range that it soon becomes familiar.
From a standing start, the E320 BLUETEC doesn't have the same feel as its gasoline counterparts, but once it gets moving the abundant torque from the turbocharged diesel V6 makes the BLUETEC extremely tractable in everyday driving conditions. With maximum torque available at a low rpm, power is available for passing at any speed with quick, smooth and quiet acceleration.
In addition to the E320 BLUETEC, the E-Class lineup includes the E350, powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque; the E550, powered by a 5.5-liter V8 that produces 382 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque; and the E63 AMG powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 507 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.
The E320 BLUETEC offers more torque than the V8-powered E550 but delivers significantly better fuel economy, rated at 27/37 city/highway compared to 15/23 city/highway for the E550 and 19/26 city/highway for the E350.
Luxury Sedans
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Introduced in early 2006, Mercedes-Benz's reworked large sedan still rules the road.
The S550 gets a 382-hp 5.5-liter V8 and a seven-speed automatic, while a monster 510-hp 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 motivates the S600.
At the very top of the lineup is the $182,275 S65 AMG, with a 604-hp version of the twin-turbo V12.
Bolstering the S-Class' reputation as a technology innovator, the options list includes radar-sensor cruise control that can apply the brakes to avoid collisions and an advanced, in-dash night view system. It's still the car to beat for big-sedan bragging rights.
Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
The luxurious and large CL-Class shares platforms with the full-size S-Class sedan.
Its updated styling retains the sleek, arching roofline and pillarless side-window area that has become a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz coupes.
The CL550 gets a 388-hp V8, while the CL600 steps up to a 517-hp twin-turbo V12. A slew of high-tech and luxury features are standard, including a system that anticipates head-on collisions.
