Volkswagen TDI powered by diesel
New Beetle two-door
Base price: $18,390
City/highway miles per gallon: 37/44
Well, Volkswagen has decided to get back to that core principle of affordability after a brief foray into upmarket motoring (ahem, Phaeton), by reducing prices on some of its entry-level rides.
Diesel-powered small cars also are a choice for optimal fuel economy. Volkswagen sells diesel versions of its Golf, Jetta and New Beetle. Government fuel economy ratings for the diesel-powered New Beetle and Golf are as high as 37/44 mpg in models with manual transmissions.
(Note that VW won't sell 2007 diesel models of its small cars. The reason: The current, 1.9-liter turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder diesel engine in the cars doesn't meet new U.S. limits for nitrogen oxide emissions.
Thus, VW officials kicked up production of their 2006 diesel-powered small cars so U.S. dealers will be able to keep selling them on into the 2007 model year, according to a VW of America Inc. spokesman. These cars just won't be labeled as 2007s.
The spokesman said this is a stopgap measure until the 2008 model year when VW will debut a new, common rail diesel engine.)

Honda Civic Hybrid
Average fuel economy: 49.88 mpg
Estimated annual fuel cost: $664
Honda promotes its Civic Hybrid sedan as a comprehensive green machine.
The Civic Hybrid's 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine burns cleanly enough to achieve the Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle rating (AT-PZEV) in all 50 states.
Refined and packed with features, the Civic is once again a top choice for compact-car shoppers.
Still the head of its class, the Civic is the most refined, solidly built economy car on the market.
Unlike Toyota's Camry Hybrid and Prius, the Civic Hybrid cannot accelerate from a stop on electricity alone.
But the gas engine will shut down during low-speed cruising and at stoplights.
